Programs

Our programs vary by the scope of their design and the scale of their target interest. Signature Programs generally include a broad scope of activities encompassing overlapping interests in the shape of the good life, the good community, and the good society. Campus and Community programs are limited mostly to curricular and co-curricular activities and public events that seek to integrate moral reflection and a sense of community into a Duke education. Labs varies widely in the focus of their principal interests but generally share a scope defined by research activities.

Signature Programs

Signature programs are interdisciplinary endeavors with no natural home in another unit of the University and generally focus on a pressing and prominent societal challenge, align with the University’s strategic priorities, bridge classrooms and campus to communities, involve community-engaged research, serve as collaborative catalysts for partnerships inside and outside Duke, and leverage the University’s intellectual resources for social impact.

Labs

We have no single model for our labs. One is co-directed by a philosopher and a neuroscientist, another by a political scientist and a sociologist, a third by an attorney who also holds degrees in public health and sociology. All three pull graduate and undergraduate students and postdocs into data-driven research projects. Another of our labs is directed by a professor of dance and explores the role of embodiment in ethics through experimental choreography. Our newest lab is directed by a group of undergraduate students under the mentorship of an economic historian.

Campus & Community

Some of our programs have as their primary focus the curricular and co-curricular life of undergraduates on and off campus, or life on campus more generally, not only at Duke but on college campuses across the country. These programs often involve pedagogical innovations and broach questions concerning the shape and purpose of higher education.

The Purpose Project at Duke

The Purpose Project fields curricular and co-curricular programs for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with the aim of giving them opportunities to explore, as an integral part of their education, what it means to live a good, meaningful, and purposeful life. The project is a large-scale Campus and Community program funded by The Duke Endowment.
