Promotional Flyer for Arete event: "The Fight Over Intellectual Diversity in Higher Ed"

Postponed

Mark your calendars. On Monday, April 20th at 5pm in Teer 203 (Pratt School), Professor Molly Worthen of UNC-Chapel Hill will deliver the talk “The Fight Over Intellectual Diversity in Higher Ed: A Report from the Trenches”at the invitation of the Arete Initiative. Professor Worthen has written about this subject in The New York Timesand serves on the Faculty Committee of the new UNC Program in Public Discourse. A description of her talk is below. I hope to see you all there.

American universities proudly declare their commitment to free and open inquiry. But are they really succeeding? In recent years, the debate over intellectual diversity in the classroom has escalated, with professors, politicians, and outside donors all jockeying for influence over the political ideas students encounter on campus. In this talk, Worthen will discuss her research on national trends on this front of the culture war, as well as her own experience at UNC—and suggest some new ways to think about the goal of intellectual diversity in a polarized age.
