Drawing the Line: A Conversation on the Works of Immoral Artists

February 6, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

J.K. Rowling, Michael Jackson, Paul Gauguin, Woody Allen, Louis C.K…

If we find an artist problematic, can we still enjoy their art—or is it better to stop engaging with it altogether? Do we have to choose between “canceling” an artist and ignoring their troubling—or even criminal—behavior? Or is there a way to navigate morally complicated art?

Join us for a conversation on the intersections of art and ethics with Erich Hatala Matthes, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Faculty Director of the Frost Center for the Environment at Wellesley College, and Tom Rankin, Professor of the Practice of Art and Documentary Studies and Director of the MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts at Duke University.

This event will take place at the Duke Coffeehouse on Duke’s East Campus.
