Join the Kenan Institute for Ethics on November 15, 2020 at 6:00pm for a conversation on storytelling and the ethics of interconnectedness with Megha Majumdar. Majumdar’s debut novel A Burning is a NYT bestseller and appeared on multiple lists for major book awards, including the National Book Award and the Carnegie Medal. Raised in India, now living in New York, Majumdar offers a poignant perspective on issues of belonging and identity. In her novel, she speaks to globally relevant concerns in a way that feels intensely personal. A Burning deftly examines the relationships between marginalized communities and society as it explores issues related to poverty and displacement, transgender rights and sexism, the allure of ethnic nationalism, and the influence of news and social media in shaping our lives.

Majumdar is visiting as part of the FOCUS Program’s Ethics, Leadership, and Global Citizenship cluster. Students in the four seminars that comprise the cluster read A Burning this term as a common text. Drawing upon insights from ethics, philosophy, history, sociology and public policy, students explore together what it means to be a global citizen and ethical leader in the twenty-first century, and what rights and obligations come with global citizenship.
