What's particularly frustrating about this is that at either end of the spectrum women never seem to win. They're either too sexy or not sexy enough; they're either presented to be sexy and flirty in the hopes of captivating more audiences, or, on the flip side, they're presented in a more masculine light in the hopes of the audience taking them "seriously". While anchors and newscasters for channels like ESPN are dolled up enough to be alluring to men, Katie Couric, a woman in a more "serious" news position, becomes increasingly masculine with every passing show: the shorter hair, the blazers, jackets. What message is this sending to women of today? That in order to be taken seriously, one has to rid themselves of any feminine charm they have? That generally speaking, they aren't being taken seriously and in fact their main purpose is to look attractive to men who will watch them (but not listen to what they're saying)? I wait for the day when it's no longer a focal point of discussion what a woman anchor looks like, much as it is never a focal point of discussion when talking about men anchors. Let news just be the news.
