I have a really hard time with killing animals at all....even the bugs, mice, etc. Ending a life just because it is inconvenient to me really disturbs me. Nevertheless, I understand that you have to control harmful animals and until there's a better way to do it (that's also easy and cheap) humane killing seems....ok (cringe). What I have a problem with is the disrespect. Why can't you just throw a ball at recess? Why does it have to be a dead being? What about the Avatar approach of "I see you Brother and thank you" (yeah I went there) to killing animals for food/necessary causes? Something I do think about though is what if instead of being sort of main stream familiar New Zealanders this group was an indigenous tribe or isolated traditional group? Would we say that the animal rights activists are trying to rob them of their culture? Why the double standard? Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, I think the people being thrown in bar games like to be called "little people" not "dwarves." Classic example of treating a human being as a means to an end, not an end in and of him/herself. I bet Kant is rolling in his grave. As the possums are rolling into theirs.
