Team Kenan uses experiential learning to engage students on food security

On a recent Sunday afternoon, a group of Duke undergraduates participated in an event combining the excitement of competition with an experience in how income affects the nutritional options for families both locally and globally. The “TK Food Challenge” was a student-designed project of Team Kenan, a Kenan Institute for Ethics program in which students plan and facilitate ways to engage the Duke student community on ethical issues that follow the Institute’s motto of “think and do.” For the challenge, the students split into three teams, each representing a family of five at a different income level. Each team shared the task of shopping for groceries and preparing a meal with nutritional specifications, while each team was given different constraints on budget, mode of transportation, and what kitchen and pantry More…

Team Kenan launches Big Questions discussion series

Most ethical dilemmas we encounter hinge on specific circumstances, but they often point to bigger questions. When laws are passed to limit soda consumption or, less conventionally, to ban dwarf tossing, we wonder about how much legal paternalism is a good thing. Team Kenan’s new Big Questions series offers a forum for people to get together to chat about thematically linked ethical dilemmas on a regular basis. Big Questions sessions are meant to be lively conversations with around ten participants in a relaxed atmosphere. They take place in Team Kenan’s “home” in 103 West Duke Building most Mondays from 3:30pm until 5pm. Join us this Monday at 3:30, when the topic will be animal ethics. Get a head start by reading a few of TK members’ thoughts on animals and More…

Submit content for Encompass, deadline Mar. 8

Encompass Ethics Magazine, Duke’s only ethics-themed student publication, is now accepting submissions—articles, photographs, essays, comics, and more—for the Spring 2013 issue. What are the ethical questions around DukeEngage?) to big picture, global issues (How do we remember the Holocaust? Is it ethical to eat GMOs?). No issue is out of bounds, and we seek submissions from undergrads, grad students, professors and members of the Duke and Durham community. Articles are typically between 500-1000 words (but this is not a strict maximum, longer pieces have been published!). Have an idea that’s not totally fleshed out? 2013 Ethics Film Festival getting started with Gran Torino Jan. 14

The Ethics Film Series is a signature series at KIE meant to engage the Durham community in conversation on ideas such as justice, personal freedoms, and social responsibility through the lens of feature films. This year’s theme is “Love and Justice,” with four films that will explore how individuals – both alone and in context of their communities – engage the tension between the demands of justice and the grace of love. When justice executed is seasoned by love, the boundaries of the ethical, social, and political expand in unprecedented ways. After each film, the audience is invited to stay and discuss issues raised by the films with Duke faculty and specialists. The screenings are free and open to the public, with parking passes and refreshments provided. The first film, Gran More…
