Whitney Welsh is a 2009-10 Kenan Graduate Colloquium Fellow and a Ph.D. candidate in the Sociology Department at Duke University. Her fields of study include comparative/historical sociology and social demography. Her dissertation, titled “Unthinkable: Mathematics and the Rise of the West,” explores the rise of the west from an ideational perspective through a comparison of the logic underlying ancient Greek geometry, medieval Arabic algebra, and early modern European calculus. She received a B.A. in Philosophy and History of Math and Science from St. John’s College in 2003 and an M.A. in Sociology from Duke in 2005.
