Aaron Thornburg is the 2009-10 Kenan Instructorship in Ethics recipient and a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Cultural Anthropology at Duke University. He studies Irish-language (Gaeilge) education and media in the context of European Unification. His dissertation project, tentatively entitled Gaeilge, Migration, and Media in ‘New Ireland,’ examines the layered intersections between social institutions, media representations, language, and (at times inconsistent) performances of cultural identity by Irish ethnographic informants in light of migration and other social effects resulting from European Unionization and increased participation in the world economy. Aaron received a B.A. in Anthropology from University of Florida, a M.A. in Anthropology from Brandeis University, and a M.Phil. in Linguistics at Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland.
