Gene Nichol presented the 2009 Luther Hodges Ethics Luncheon, sponsored by the Research Triangle Park Rotary Club and the Kenan Institute for Ethics. Nichol is professor of law and Director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina. From 2005-2008, he served as the 26th president of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Nichol was Burton Craige professor and dean of the law school at the University of North Carolina from 1999-2005. He served as law dean at the University of Colorado from 1988-1995; and as James Gould Cutler Professor and Director of the Institute of Bill of Rights Law at William & Mary from 1985-1988. Nichol founded the Byron White Center of Constitutional Law at the University of Colorado (1990) and the Center for Civil Rights at the University of North Carolina (2001).

He is co-author of Federal Courts: Cases and Comments (2000) and a contributing author of Where We Stand: Voices of Southern Dissent (2004). He has written for numerous journals as well as the Washington Post, The Nation, the Chronicle of Higher Education and various periodicals.
