Ethics Film Series: Community

January 25- April 5, 2011
Griffith Film Theater (map)

The 2011 spring film series features films that touch on the theme “Community.”

Ethical commitments are one characteristic/expression of community, these include what is valued in the community and why it is valued. These commitments define the boundaries between who is in and who is out of the community, and balance individual rights and interests against those of the community as a whole.

The films in the 2011 series consider the tensions between the rights and desires of the individual compared to what is best for the community; communities formed within communities and how these smaller communities (teams, military units) are built and enrich the lives of members; what happens when a community is disbanded; and how a community values its members.

The 2011 series includes the following films:
January 25 – Heart of the Game
February 15 – Restrepo
March 15 – Monica & David
April 5 – Lars and the Real Girl

All films will be shown in the Griffith Film Theater. All are free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Bryan Center Parking Deck. The film series is presented in conjunction with Duke’s Screen/Society, the Center for Documentary Studies and the Arts of the Moving Image Program.
